셰일암은 가장 흔한 퇴적암 중의 하나로 암석의 약 70%를 차지하고 있다고 한다. 유기물질의 함량이 높을수록 더 어두우며, 성분에 따라 다양한 색깔을 띠고 있다. 미국은 최근 이 셰일암에서 석유와 천연 가스를 생산하고 있는데 바로 이로 인해 세계적으로 많은 변화를 일으키고 있다.
세계 최대 산유국 중 하나인 베네수엘라는 최근 경제적으로 많은 어려움을 겪고 있다. 생필품을 70% 이상 수입에 의존하고 있는 상황이라 국영 상점에 생필품이 입고되었다는 소식이 들리기만 하면 꽤 오랜 시간 줄을 서며 기다려야 하고, 이마저도 5부제 방식으로 운영되고 있어 모든 이들이 필요한 생필품을 구입하기 매우 어려운 상황이라고 한다. 화폐 가치가 심각하게 떨어졌고, 일자리를 구하는 것마저 어려운 상황으로 14% 실업률과 74%의 빈곤률을 보이고 있다. 석유 매장량이 세계 1위이지만 최대 바이어인 미국을 잃어버림으로써 벌어진 현상인 것이다.
또한 중동 산유국이나 러시아도 꽤 타격이 있는 듯 하다. 하지만 작년 중동 산유국들은 OPEC 회의에서 감산하지 않기로 함에 따라 가히 제 2의 오일 쇼크라 불릴만한 저유가 시대가 계속되고 있다.
사실 얼마전까지만 해도 미국이 중동의 정세에 신경을 가장 많이 쓴 원인이 석유라고 말해도 과언이 아니었다. 1973년 이스라엘과 아랍 사이의 제 4차 중동 전쟁이 발발했을 당시 서방 국가들은 이스라엘의 손을 들어줬는데 이로 인해 OPEC에서 이 국가들에게 원유 가격을 인상하겠다고 선포했고, 이것은 미국 경제에 엄청난 타격을 줬다.
석유는 두 얼굴을 가지고 있다. 한 나라를 부유하게 만들기도 하지만 빈곤하게 만들기도 한다는 것...

This's situation to depend on import more than 70% for daily necessity, so if there are a news that daily necessity was came in national stores, they have to wait line up for a long time, every people can't buy daily necessity because it was managed a way of 5th-day-no. It seriously declined a currency value and it was difficult situation finding job, so it's showing unemployment rate of 14% and poverty rate of 74%. This country is 1st place in oil reserves in the world, but they lost US who was the most buyer.
Also it seems to be pretty damage oil-producing countries of the Middle East and Russia. But oil-producing countries of the Middle East decided not to reduce producing in the OPEC last year, so it's continuing low oil price era as being called the second oil shock crisis.
The cause of paying attention to circumstances of the Middle East in US was no exaggeration to say that oil until recently. When the war of the fourth Middle East between Israel and Arab begin, The west's countries took side of Israel, the result, OPEC declared increase oil price to these countries, This gave big damage to America's economic.

셰일 오일과 가스의 존재 여부를 130여년전부터 알고 있었지만 그 자체 기술이 부족하여 상용화된 건 10년이 채 되지 않았다고 한다. 조지 미첼은 수압파쇄기법을 최초로 개발한 이로써 17년이란 시간이 걸렸고, 당시 많은 이들이 난색을 표했다고 하는데 그 어려움을 딛고 결국은 셰일 자원 추출에 성공했다.
수직으로 땅을 파다가 셰일 암석층을 만나면 다시 수평으로 판 후 전기충격으로 셰일 암석층에 균열을 주고, 거기에 물과 모래와 화학 용액을 엄청난 압력으로 분사해 미세한 틈을 만들어 이 틈으로 셰일층에 갇혀져 있던 석유와 천연 가스가 지상으로 뿜어져 나온다. 매일 10만 배럴의 석유와 600 큐빅피트의 천연 가스가 나오고 있고, 가스와 석유의 추출 비율은 대략 6 : 4 정도라고 한다.
미국 전역에서 셰일 가스가 나오고 있으며 모든 지하 자원을 땅 소유주가 가질 수 있어 하루 아침에 돈 방석에 앉는 사람도 간간이 나오고 있을 뿐만 아니라 셰일 자원 개발에 필요한 노동력 덕택으로 그 주위의 숙박업이 활성화되었고, 주변 땅값도 상승했으며 고소득 일자리도 증가하고 있다. 또한 장비 임대업도 활성화되었고, 천연 가스를 원료(에틸렌, 비료, 플라스틱 등)로 하는 기업들에게도 큰 영향을 끼쳐 미국 제조업 부활의 견인차 역할을 하고 있으며 오래된 석탄발전소를 철거하고 그 자리에 가스 발전소를 건설하는 등 또 다른 일자리를 창출하고 있다.
현재 미국에는 876개의 시추기가 있고, 셰일 오일은 58조 큐빅피트, 셰일 가스 매장량은 665조 배럴에 달한다고 한다. 현재 70% 이상 국내에 수급되고 있는데 2017년쯤 미국 자국내에 100% 공급할 수 있을 거라고 전망하고 있으며 100년간 셰일 가스를 공급할 수 있기 때문에 이것이 60만개의 일자리를 창출할 것이라 예상되고 있다.

Also rental of equipment also was revitalized, it has a big influence to companies who do raw material by natural gas(ethylene, fertilizer, plastic, etc...), so it's doing role like tow truck of manufacturing business's restoration in America, it tears down old coal power plant and builds gas power plant at the location and etc, it's creating another jobs.

물론 장점만 있는 것은 아닌 것 같다. 이 다큐멘터리에서는 장점만 언급했지만 관련 기사를 조금 뒤져보니 셰일층을 자극하다보면 지진이 발생될 수 있고, 환경 오염을 유발할 수 있다고 한다.
아마 자원 개발을 포기하는 것 자체는 힘들지 모르겠지만 최대한 자연을 보호하며 추출할 수 있는 방법까지도 함께 연구해봐야 하지 않을까 싶고, 이미 그런 부분까지 염두해두고 있지 않을까 싶다.
이 에피소드를 보며 느낀 점은 미국을 사람으로 비유하면 미국은 전생에 나라를 10번은 구했던 것 같다는 것이다. 2008년 금융 위기가 있었고, 중국이 그 뒤를 바짝 추월하려 한다해도 여전히 세계 1위의 강대국인데 이젠 자원까지 100% 국내 수급이 가능해졌단다. 물론 셰일 자원을 추출하기 위한 미국민의 아주 많은 노력이 있었고, 그 노력 덕택에 미국만이 이 기술을 보유하고 있다고는 하지만 자금과 넓은 영토, 많은 인구수만으로도 최고인데 이젠 자원까지 가지게 되었다...... 전기차를 보급하려는 노력도 셰일 에너지가 있어서 가능한 것 같고......

{Of course, it doesn't seem to be only advantage. This program mentioned only advantage, but I search about the news a little, if it stimulates Shale rock layer over and over again, it can happen earthquake and lead to environmental pollution.
Maybe it's hard forgiving resources development, however I think it has to study how can extract ones with protecting nature, it will give a thought to that part.
Thing feeling of this episode, I think God loves US so much. There was a financial crisis of 2008, even though China closely tries to pass the back, it's still world powerful of the first place, besides I heard resources are being possible supply and demand of 100% in domestic. Of course, there were American's effort for extraction of Shale resources very much, US is only having this technology due to the effort, however it's the best only money and large territory and a lot of population, they lately have resources in addition...... I think trying to disseminate of electric car is possible due to Shale energy......

그래도 미국의 대단한 점은 나무와 숲을 함께 본다는 점인 것 같다. 현재의 위기 대응 능력도 좋은 편이지만 바둑으로 치면 한 수가 아닌 두세수까지 인내심을 가지고 미리 함께 준비한다는 점에 있어서 우리 나라도 그리고 나도 본받아야 할 점이 아닐까 싶다. 비록 우리 나라는 많은 걸 가지지는 못했지만 우리만의 강점을 만들어가야 할 것이고, 나도 마찬가지로 인내심을 가지고 많은 정보와 노력을 통해 내 미래를 설계해나가야 할 것이다.
(By the way, I think the great thing of America sees forest with tree. A skill to cope with crisis of the present is good, besides I think my country and I should emulate in point of thing if it's like Baduk(Chess), it prepares to have patience till two-three move not a move. Although my country doesn't have a lot of thing, but it'll have to make only our strength, I'll similarly have to plan my future according to much information and effort with patience.)
