홈 팀이 2-0으로 앞서던 3회였다. 2사 2루에서 우전 안타가 나왔다. 거리가 애매했다. 2루 주자가 홈을 노리기에는 충분치 않았다. 그런데 2사였다. 주자의 달리기 실력도 괜찮은 편이다. 승부를 걸어보고 싶다.

3루 코치 크리스 우드워드는 눈을 질끈 감았다. ‘에라 모르겠다.’ 오른팔을 사정없이 돌렸다. 이제 돌이킬 수 없다. 전력질주만 남았다. 또 모르지 않는가. 상대의 실수를 바랄 뿐이다.

그러나 우익수(노마 마자라)의 송구는 너무나 완벽했다. 포수 미트에 원 바운드 스트라이크가 꽂혔다. 2루 주자는 서너 걸음이나 남았다. 누가봐도 결과는 뻔했다. 세번째 아웃 카운트가 선언되면서 이닝이 끝나려는 찰나였다.

하지만 여기서 떠올려야 할 사실이 하나 있다. 달려 들어오는 주자의 별명이다. 바이슨(Bison), 그러니까 미국 들소다. 마치 맹수처럼 돌진하던 그는 앞에 보이는 장애물을 사정없이 들이받았다. 포수 로빈슨 치리노스의 헬멧+마스크가 저만치로 날아갔다.

비록 짧은 시간이었다. 그럼에도 어제(한국시간 14일) 다저스와 레인저스의 갈등은 많은 요소를 포함하고 있는 사건이었다. <…구라다>는 그걸 하나의 시각으로 응축시켜 재구성했다. 세계적인 ‘스트라이킹 스타’ 루그네드 오도어를 주인공으로 등장시켜서 말이다.

오도어는 어디서, 어떻게 나타났을까...

우선 규정에 대한 개념부터 정리하고 가자. 2014년 메이저리그는 새로운 규정 하나를 도입했다. 홈 충돌 방지법, 일명 ‘포지룰’이라고 불리는 것이다. 여기에 따르면 홈으로 쇄도하는 주자는 포수에게 충격을 주려는 의도로 부딪혀서는 안된다. 반대로 포수는 주루선상을 고의로 막을 수 없다. 2011년 자이언츠의 포수 버스터 포지가 다리 골절로 시즌 아웃된 사건에서 비롯된 규정이다.

• The expanded instant replay rules, which also go into effect this season, will be available to review potential violations of Rule 7.13.
어제 사건은 룰에 위반됐을까? 아니다. 적어도 심판진은 그렇게 해석하지 않았다. 현장의 심판조장이던 빌 웰크는 “주자 켐프와 포수 치리노스의 플레이는 모두 홈 충돌 방지규정에 반하는 것은 아니었다”고 설명했다. 정상적이었다는 뜻이다. 다만 퇴장을 선언한 이유는 “그 이후 서로 폭력적인 행동을 했기 때문”이라고 부연했다.

심판은 그렇다쳐도 제프 배니스터 감독은 지나치리만큼 객관적이고 냉정했다. 절대 자기 팀 포수를 두둔하지 않는다. “주자가 결정을 내릴 시간은 없었을 것이다. 일부러 충돌을 피하려고 할 필요는 없었다. 정상적인 플레이였다. 아마도 서로 밀치면서 감정이 폭발했던 것 같다.” 참, 로비(치리노스의 애칭)가 들으면 퍽도 좋아하겠다.
{Even if it understands umpires, Manager Jeff Banister was totally objective and cold-hearted. He did never side with catcher of his team. "It wouldn't be enough time a runner can decide. - I totally agree about these columnist's words. I know well they didn't violent that rule, but should manager of one team speak like that? If Chirinos got injured, can it tell like that? Though I don't like him, I think good it doesn't tell "It didn't intentionally need to avoid collision". Of course I hate managers or players of old school style like this. Because I've seen some players who got injured and surgery like Buster Posey and Jordy Mercer and Jung Ho Kang. So I don't like Joe Maddon, Anthony Rizzo, Carlos Gomez, Jose Batista, Rougned Odor(The person who I can't understand the most), Travis Ishikawa, etc -}
각설하고. 사건이 일어났다. 동시에 가장 궁금한 부분이 있다. 오도어의 활약상(?)이다. 도대체 어디에서, 무엇을, 어떻게 했을까 하는 부분이다.

사건의 발단은 켐프가 치리노스를 강하게 밀치면서 시작됐다. 이 때 오도어는 어디에 있었을까. 1루에 있었다. 1루수 갈로가 우익수와 포수 사이, 커트맨의 위치로 이동했기 때문에 비어있던 베이스를 지키러 들어간 것이다. 그 자리에서 홈 쪽을 주목하고 있었을 것이다. 충돌하는 순간부터 사태의 조짐이 보였기 때문이다.

Because Gallo being 1st baseman moved to position between right field and home plate, he came into 1st base for keeping empty base. He would pay attention on the way of home plate. 켐프와 치리노스가 엉키기 시작하자. 가까운 거리에 있는 선수들이 일제히 가담했다. 바로 뒤에 있던 투수 콜 해멀스는 적극적인 중재자였다. 곧바로 가해자를 끌어안고 저지시켰다. 그 역시 193㎝, 94㎏의 거구다. ‘들소’의 난동을 제압할 충분한 힘을 가졌다. 이어서 1루수 조이 갈로, 대기 타석의 코디 벨린저가 분쟁을 막아섰다. 물론 이들의 목적은 말리기 위해서였다.

그러나 반대의 의도를 갖고 돌진한 인물이 있다. 오도어다. 그는 훨씬 더 먼 위치에 있었음에도 마치 단거리 선수처럼 폭발적인 스피드를 발휘했다. 어느새 글러브도 벗어던진 채였다.
(But there's one person who has opposite intention and rushes. He's Odor. Even though he was farther position, he showed explosion speed such as sprinter. it was already a pose taking off his glove.)
목표점은 뻔했다. 곧바로 응징할 대상을 향해 직진했다. 그러나 저격 지점에 다다르기 직전 장애물이 나타났다. 조금 더 가까운 위치에 있던 3루수 애드리안 벨트레였다. 하필이면 벨트레는 오도어의 오른쪽을 막아섰다. 해멀스에게 꽉 잡혀있던 켐프의 왼쪽을 보호하면서, 유명한 라이트 스트레이트의 발사를 원천 봉쇄해준 셈이다.
(It could perfectly know the target. He went straight to someone punishes soon. But obstruction appeared before just reaching the target. He was Adrian Beltre being 3rd baseman a little nearer position. Of all things, Beltre stopped the right side of Odor. He protected Kemp's left side that was grabbed tightly from Hamels and blocked famous right straight punch beforehand.)
그리고 잠시 후 홈팀에서 나온 경호원 로건 포사이드가 마크맨으로 투입되면서 긴박한 상황은 일단락 됐다. 포사이드의 활약상은 뒤에 따로 설명하겠다.

만약 조금이라도 늦었다면? 어쩌면 2016년 5월에 일어났던 그 장면이 다시 한번 연출됐을 지 모른다.

당시 ESPN은 야구 하이라이트 방송에 테디 애틀라스라는 복싱 해설자를 불렀다. 그는 보자마자 격찬을 쏟아냈다. “농구나 풋볼, 하키 선수들 싸우는 걸 많이 봤다. 대부분은 참 안쓰럽다. 마음만 급해서 허둥거리기 일쑤다. 그런데 이건 완전히 제대로다. 깨끗한 카운터 블로가 안쪽으로 파고 들며 정확하게 적중했다. 체중이 실린 완벽한 동작이었다. 틀림없이 프로에게 레슨을 받았을 것이다. 아니면 복서의 천부적인 재능을 타고 났을 것이다.”

둘의 체급 차이를 따져봐야 한다. 맷 켐프는 올 시즌을 앞두고 무려 18㎏이나 감량했다고 밝혔다. 그럼에도 여전히 95㎏의 육중한 체중을 자랑한다. 키도 6피트 4인치, 193㎝나 된다. 반면 오도어는 180㎝에 88㎏ 정도다. 체급으로 따지면 미들급과 슈퍼 헤비급의 차이는 날 것이다.

실전을 보자. 총소리와 함께 덕아웃에서 스타트가 이뤄졌다. 가장 먼저 허들을 넘어 달려온 홈 팀 선수가 있다. 아칸사스 대학 시절 도루 챔피언을 지낸 로건 포사이드였다. 그는 곧바로 분쟁 지점을 향했다. 그리고 가장 위험한 요소를 향해 몸을 날렸다. 타이밍도 절묘했다. 폭탄이 터지기 일보 직전이었다.

이후 그는 전담 마크맨이 됐다. 사태가 완전히 해결될 때까지 밀착 수비를 하며 철저한 경계를 늦추지 않았다.

2년 전에는 치리노스가 오도어를 위해 참전

물론 오도어는 유명한 스트라이커다. 2년 전 사건으로 인해 일약 세계적인 스타가 됐다. 블루제이스 팬에게는 살해 위협도 받지만, 텍사스에서는 영웅이 됐다.
(Of course, Odor's a famous striker. He became an international star at a jump by a case of two years ago. He got murder threat from any Blue Jays fans, but he was a hero in Texas.)
그렇다 하더라도 거친 이미지가 썩 달가울 리 없다. 그럼에도 이날 전투의 선봉에 선 데는 이유가 있다. 피해자인 치리노스와의 끈끈한 관계다. 비록 10살 차이가 있지만 같은 베네수엘라 출신이라는 동질감이 강하다.

문제는 당시 그의 신분이었다. 부상자 명단에 올라 그라운드에 나갈 수 없는 처지였던 것이다. 이 점이 드러나자 리그 사무국은 그에게 추가 징계를 때렸다. 적지 않은 액수의 벌금까지 물어야 했다. 이를테면 가중 처벌같은 조치였다.
(The problem was his position then. He couldn't go out on the field due to being DL. To expose this point, MLB officials suspended additionally to him. He payed a substantial fine. For example, it was a measure such as additional punishment.)
어쨌든 오도어의 습격은 미수에 그쳤다. 포사이드의 밀착 마크 덕분이었다. 그러나 어쩌면 켐프가 진짜로 가슴을 쓸어내려야 할 인물은 따로 있을지 모른다. 바로 불펜에서 달려나온 백넘버 51번의 존재다.

그는 몹시 어두운 과거를 지닌 인물이다. 잘 알려진 것은 음주 뺑소니 사고를 내고 3년 반의 실형을 살았던 일이다. 하지만 그에게는 어두웠던 과거는 한두개가 아니다. 특히 폭력과 관련된 전력이 3개 이상이나 포함됐다.

특히 2009년 사건 때 경찰의 심문 조서는 섬찟할 정도다. ‘CCTV 화면에 나타난 것을 보면 피의자는 골프채를 이용해 폭력을 행사했다. 이미 쓰러져서 비명을 지르고 있는 무방비 상태의 피해자를 여러차례, 무자비하게, 내리쳤다.’
