미합중국이라는 국가가 태동한 이후, 가장 오랜 역사를 자랑하는 보스턴은 어쩌면 미국민들에게도 자부심의 하나일지도 모르겠다. 다소 짧은 역사를 가진 탓으로 나라 자체도 그렇고, 그 국민들도 역사적인 스토리 그리고 산물에 대해서는 매우 목마른 상황이라고 들었으니 말이다.
(Since a country being United States of America was begun, maybe Boston where boasts the oldest history is one of pride. I've heard they have the tendency due to short history and nations thirst for historic stories and relics by themselves.)
2019년은 불행하게도 단 한번의 여행으로 그것도 매우 짧은 8박 9일만이 나에게 허락된 시간이었고, 그 시간을 알차게 보내기 위해 여행 계획을 짜는데 골머리를 앓기도 했으나, 어쨌든 올해도 그 과업을 이어나갈 수 있었다. 참, 살아갈수록 왜 이렇게 삶이 각박하고 힘든지 알 수가 없다. 이제 나에게 탈출구는 여행이 전부인 듯 싶다. 야구도 예전처럼 재미있지는 않으니 말이다.
(Unfortunately, only so short time of 8 nights 9 days with travel once was permitted to me in 2019, it was bother my head of planning travel schedule for meaningfully spending the time though, anyway the bucket list was able to continue this year. Huh, the more living, the living why life's heartless and tough...... I'm reducing interest about baseball as the past.)
그렇다고 할지라도, 여전히 나의 버킷 리스트 달성 그리고 재설정은 계속될 것이고, 야구에 대한 흥미도 완전히 사라지지는 않을 것 같다. 모든 부분은 아니어도 여러가지 일들이 잘 풀리게 되면 다시 찾을 수 있겠지. 물론 여행은 항상 나를 행복하게 만드는 삶의 활력소이다.
(Although that, achieving and resetting my bucket list is still continued, I don't think it disappears interest of baseball. Even if it isn't everthing, it will be able to find again if some things go well. Of course, travel is always my tonic that makes me happy.)

짧은 시간인만큼 치열하게 일정을 소화했고, 사실 순수한 관광 목적으로 간 곳이 별로 없다. 뭐, 주목적은 MLB 야구장 투어이니 큰 상관은 없었지만 말이다. 역시 항상 하던 패턴대로, 각 도시별로 순수 관광-야구장-야구 게임 이렇게 글을 써볼까 한다. 나중에 이 글들을 다시 보면 부끄러울 때가 한두번이 아니긴 해도 이렇게 나의 역사가 점점 쌓이는 건 꽤 기분 좋은 일이다.
(I intensely digested my schedules as short time, honestly there aren't some places that go aiming at pure tour. Well, it didn't matter so my main purpose's tour of MLB ballparks. By my pattern that I have written every time, I'm going to post pure tour-ballparks-baseball game each cities. Even though it used to feel shameful whenver I read these posts again later, accumulating my histories like this is pretty good.)
1. [2019 MLB TOUR(1)] 미국에서 가장 오래된 도시, 보스턴 (Boston, The Oldest city in USA)
[찰스 리버에서 본 보스턴 시내(Downtown Boston at Charles River)]
보스턴은 메사추세츠의 주도이며, 뉴잉글랜드 최대의 도시로 「뉴잉글랜드의 수도」 라는 별칭을 가지고 있다. 1630년 영국 청교도들이 이주하면서 이 도시를 세웠고, 18세기 후반의 보스턴 학살, 보스턴 차 사건 등으로 인해 미국 독립혁명의 중요한 거점 도시가 되었다. 이후 간척 사업으로 영토가 확장되었으며 첨단 산업 뿐만 아니라 금융, 관광 산업 또한 유명하다. 보스턴의 문화적 전통은 뉴잉글랜드 전체와 공통점이 많고, 정치·종교적인 전통은 아일랜드계 미국인이 큰 영향을 끼쳤다. 아일랜드계-이탈리아계-서인도제도계의 인구가 다수이고, LGBT의 비율이 미국에서 5번째로 많은 도시라고 한다.
아마 '보스턴'에서 가장 유명한 것을 꼽으라면 '교육'일 것이다. 하버드 대학교(미국에서 가장 오래된 대학교), 메사추세츠 공과대학(MIT 세계 최초의 공과대학), 버클릭 음악 대학(세계 최고의 음악 대학)이 보스턴 케임브리지와 시내에 위치하고 있고, 보스턴 라틴 스쿨은 미국에서 가장 오래된 공립 학교이다. 스포츠 팬들에게는 보스턴 레드삭스(MLB), 보스턴 셀틱스(NBA), 뉴잉글랜드 패트리어츠(NFL)이 매우 유명할텐데 펜웨이 파크를 방문해본 나로선 보스턴 시민들 대다수가 레드삭스 팬임은 분명한 듯 했다. 야구장에서 너무 고생을 많이 했었기 때문에...!!!
그 밖에 미국 최초의 지하철망인 MBTA(1897년), 미국에서 가장 오래된 공원인 보스턴 코먼(1634년), 미국에서 가장 오래되었으면서 3대 미술관으로 꼽히는 보스턴 미술관(1876년), 미국 최초의 도서관인 보스턴 도서관(1848년) 등 미국 최초라는 수식어가 많이 붙어있는 곳이다.
(Boston has a nickname 「Capitol of New England」 as a main city of Massachusetts and the largest city in New England. Puritans in UK moved and built this city in 1630, it became a important main city of American Revolution caused by Boston Massacre and Boston Tea Party and etc in the bottom of 18 century. After that, it extended land by a reclamation project, finance and tourism industry with high technoligy are famous as well. Cutural tradition of Boston is similar with a whole of New England, Irish-American gave the big influence about polictical and religious tradition. There're many population of Irish-Italian-Creole, a rate of LGBT's the 5th city in USA.
Maybe it's 'education' if you point out the most famous things. Harvard University(the oldest univercity in USA) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT, the first engineering university in the world) and Berklee College of Music(the best of music school in the world) locate Cambridge and downtown, Boston Latin School's the oldest public school in USA. Boston Red Sox(MLB) and Boston Celtics(NBA) and New England Patriots(NFL) are very famous to sports fans, it seems to be majority of Boston citizens is Red Sox's fans as I am person that has visited to Fenway Park. Because it felt tiredness pretty much there...!!!
In addition, it's a city where is called modifier of the first in USA a lot that MBTA being the first subway system in USA(1897), Boston Common being the oldest park in USA(1634), Museum of Fine arts Boston being the oldest art museum and the one of 3 ones of the world(1876), Boston Public Library Foundation being the first library in USA, etc.)

보스턴에 도착한 후 2일째 되는 날은 주일이었다. 가톨릭 신자로서, 가급적이면 미사를 참석하는 게 좋다는 생각이라 펜웨이 파크 근처의 성당을 알아봤고, 홈페이지에서 보니 이 곳의 신부님 강론이 인상적인 느낌이라 오전 11시 15분 교중 미사에 참석하게 되었다. 물론 영어를 잘 못해서 다 알아듣지는 못했으나, 피곤한 몸을 이끌고 간 나도 졸지는 않았던 것 같다.
청교도들이 만든 도시이기는 하지만 의외로 보스턴 내에서는 로마 가톨릭 신자가 가장 많다고 한다. 예전에 가끔 한국의 다른 지역에 있는 야구장을 다니면서 근처의 성당을 찾아가 미사에 참석하곤 했었는데 다 천차만별의 분위기라 이 재미도 쏠쏠한 기억이 나는데 재작년 샌프란시스코, 올해 보스턴의 성당도 마찬가지로 각기 다른 분위기를 엿볼 수 있었다. 샌프란시스코는 굉장히 자유분방한 분위기였다면 보스턴은 다소 엄숙한 느낌이었다. 뭔가 보스턴이 클래식에 더 가까운 느낌이었다고나 할까... 물론 우리나라보다 엄숙한 분위기는 아니다.
(The second day after arriving Boston was Sunday. As I'm Catholic, I've looked for Cathedral or Catholic Church close Fenway Park so I think Catholic should attend Sunday Mass if it is possible, watching a video of one Church's website, I felt impressive about sermon of father here, so I attended Mass at 11:15 am. Of course, I couldn't all understand sermon caused by lacking English's skill, however I remember it wasn't boring although I was so tired.
It's a city built Puritan though, unexpectedly it has the most Catholic within Boston. Sometimes I used to go baseball stadiums and attend Mass of Catholic churchs of another area in Korea in the past, they had different feeling at each other, I felt enjoy as well, I also felt novelty in San Francisco a couple years ago and Boston this year just the same. It was freewheeling atmosphere in San Francisco, solemn atmosphere somewhat in Boston. I think Boston's closer the classic of Roman Catholic... It's sure it hasn't solemn atmosphere than Korea's ones.)

처음 보스턴 덕 투어란 명칭을 들었을 때, 차량이 오리 모양이라서 그런건지 알았건만, 육지에서는 차량으로, 물가에서는 보트로 이용할 수 있어서 그런 이름이 붙은 것 같다. 운전기사, 가이드가 함께 동승하여 가는 곳곳마다 역사적 사실이나 정보 등을 안내해주고, 오디오북이 있어서 나 같은 외국인들을 위해서 다양한 언어로 제공되고 있었다. 8개의 언어를 제공하고 있고, 독일어, 스페인어, 포르투칼어, 중국어, 일본어, 한국어 정도 기억난다. 나 같은 경우는 못하는 영어지만 오디오북까지 들으니 더 정신이 없는 것 같아 그냥 가이드의 설명을 들었고, 내 옆에 있었던 오스트리아인도 그랬던 것 같다. ^^
역시 사전에 조사했던 정보대로 보스턴 내에 있는 해당 건물이나 장소에 대한 역사적 사실을 들려주었고, 맛집에 대한 정보, 보스턴 마라톤과 펜웨이 파크의 역사적 의의, 레드삭스, 셀틱스 등 스포츠에 대한 이야기도 들었던 기억이 난다.
(When I heard name "Boston Duck Tour" at the first time, I thought to be called so vehicle has duck shape, however I think so that it can use car in land and boat in river. A car driver and guide ride with us, a guide tells historic facts and information, it has been providing the storires by audio books of various languages for foreigners like me. They provide 8 languages, I remember German and Spanish and Portuguese and Chinese and Japanese and Korean. In my case, I just heard stories of guide so I was confused more listening audio book with English, it seemed an Austrian next to me was so. :)
He had been tellig historic facts about buildings or places within Boston as I searched before departing this travel, I remember stories about information of famous restaurants and historical significance of Boston Marathon and Fenway Park and sports like Red Sox and Celtics.)
[스카이워크 전망대에서 본 보스턴 야경(Boston night view seen in Skywalk Observatory)]
짧은 여행 일정 탓으로 보스턴에서 2박 3일만 머무를 수 있었기 때문에 내가 사랑해 마지 않는 야경을 보기 위해 전망대로 갔다. 물론 보스턴에서의 마지막 코스는 아니었다. 다음날 볼티모어로 이동하기 전에 펜웨이 파크 투어를 했으니 말이다!
어쨌든 처음에 전망대 위치를 찾을 때 굉장히 많이 헤맸던 것 같다. 푸르덴셜 타워 일대가 다 쇼핑몰이라 구글맵을 이용했음에도 입구를 찾기가 매우 어려웠는데 저 투명한 입구로 들어가면 데스크에 두 신사분이 앉아있고, 그 분들에게 신분증을 보여준 후 엘리베이터를 타면 된다. 난 호텔에서 여권을 안 가지고 나왔기에 이미지로 보여드렸더니 그냥 무사 통과되었다.
전망대 유리가 그 반대편의 조명에 반사되어 사진을 찍는 데 많은 어려움이 있긴 하였지만 보스턴의 야경 또한 너무 아름다웠다. 찰스 강을 끼고 양 편으로 많은 건물들의 불빛이 조화로웠으며 이 곳에서 펜웨이 파크도 볼 수 있었다.
(Because I was able to stay only 2 nights 3 days in Boston due to a short travel schedule, I went to observatory for watching night scene. Of course this wasn't the last course in Boston. I did Fenway Park tour before moving to Baltimore next day!
BTW, I wandered around here before I found out this observatory at first. The whole district of Prudential Tower's all shoppingmall, so I couldn't find out the entrance even though I used Googlemap, but it comes into entrance seen transparent windows, two men sit down at desk, it should take elevator after showing ID card. I showed image of passprt to him so my passport was into my room of hotel, I passed through it.
It struggled with taking photographs cause glass of observatory was reflected by lights though, Boston's night scene was pretty great as well. Light of many buildings by both sides harmonized with Charles River, it could watch Fenway park here.)
샌프란시스코, 덴버, 시카고, 피츠버그, 토론토, 워싱턴 DC와 함께 나의 페이보릿 리스트에 보스턴도 올라왔고, 야구 티켓값이 너무 비싼 것이 가장 큰 단점이기는 해도 살 기회가 있다면 살아보고 싶다. 대도시이긴 하지만 조용하고, 치안도 좋은 편에 역사적인 스토리가 많은 것이 마음에 든다!
(Boston comes into my favorite lists with San Francisco and Denver and Chicago and Pittsburgh and Toronto and Washington DC, even though what baseball ticket is so expensive is weakness, I want to live in Boston if there is chance. This city's a big city though, I love it is quite and has good public safety, there are many historical stories!)
